About the event

Step into a quiet, refined world and experience the timeless beauty of the Japanese tea ceremony — The Way of Tea.

During this intimate workshop, tea master Shinobu Yajima will gently guide you through the essence and philosophy of Chadō (Japanese tea ceremony) through a thoughtfully curated presentation and live demonstration.

Workshop contents:

  • A short introduction to the history of The Way of Tea

  • The spirit behind the practice, including the Zen concept Wa-Kei-Sei-Jaku (harmony, respect, purity, tranquillity)

  • Explanation of a traditional tea gathering

  • Introduction to matcha: what it is and how it is made

Following the presentation, Shinobu will demonstrate the mindful preparation of matcha.

Guests will then enjoy freshly prepared matcha — made with tea brought directly from Japan — served alongside traditional Japanese sweets, creating a moment of calm and sensory appreciation. A Q&A session will conclude the experience.

The workshop takes place in a traditional Japanese tea room in Twello, offering an authentic and serene setting that reflects the spirit of Chadō.

About the Instructor

Shinobu Yajima (tea name Sōno, 宗乃) was born in Tokyo, Japan, and has devoted over 15 years to the practice of the Japanese tea ceremony (Chadō Urasenke).

Her journey began in Canada, where she studied under Shin Sōfu (宗楓), a direct student of Hōunsai Sōshō, the 15th-generation Urasenke Grand Master (Sōshitsu XV).

Now based in the Netherlands, Shinobu has created a peaceful Japanese tearoom in Twello, where she welcomes guests to experience the art of Chadō and offers ongoing lessons.

Through her teaching and workshops, she shares not only the refined aesthetics of the tea ceremony, but also its deeper philosophy — harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility.
